Home is more than just a place; it’s where you refuel, rest, and create memories that stay with you forever. Because it plays such an important role in your life, it’s worth making it a space that feels uniquely yours.
When it comes to decorating and designing our living spaces, the styles are endless—traditional, modern, western, art deco, and so on. But the real magic happens when you combine the styles that resonate with you and then add personal touches that make the space truly your own.
Here are eight ways to create a home that reflects your unique style. Grab a pen, a piece of paper, and let’s dive in!
Identify How You Want to Feel– Before picking out decor or deciding on a design, take a moment to reflect on how you want to feel in your home. Do you want to feel energized, cozy, peaceful, or inspired? Also, consider how your home makes you feel now—overwhelmed, comfortable, blah? Invite your family into the conversation too! Understanding how everyone wants the space to feel will help you create a home that works for everyone. If you need more guidance for this step, download my free Home Design Inspiration List. A key tool in this process. You can also use it for your next step, Identify What You Like.
Identify What You Like – Spend some time exploring the styles that resonate with you. You don’t have to stick to just one—mix and match! For example, in our home, we’re drawn to modern, craftsman, western, rustic, and aged styles.
If you’re unsure where to start, download my free Home Design Styles list. Then take a stroll through Pinterest or Instagram to see which styles catch your eye.
Name Your Style – Once you’ve identified the styles you love, combine them into something uniquely yours. Give your style a name that resonates with you—something like “Rustic Modern Charm” or “Cozy Vintage Minimalism.” This is where the fun begins! Combine the styles you love into something unique. For example, we’ve named our style Refined Farmhouse Retreat.
This style name now guides every decision we make about our space, from decor to functionality.
This step helps you stay grounded in your vision and makes it easier to filter out items that don’t align with your style.
Appreciate without comparing – It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap when you see other beautifully designed homes. But here’s the thing: you can admire someone else’s floral vintage vibe or sleek minimalist design without feeling like your home needs to match theirs.
Focus on appreciating your home for what it is, whether it’s a brand-new build or an old farmhouse. Let go of the pressure to constantly have “new” or “perfect.”
Curate over time – Once you’ve named your style and identified how you want your home to make you feel, take your time creating your space. Sometimes you’ll know exactly what you want, and other times you’ll have to wait to find the right piece. Give yourself permission to be patient,.
This step aligns with appreciating without comparing. Don’t be distracted by the latest shiny thing unless it aligns with your home’s vision and purpose.
We are several years into our farmhouse fixer upper, and while I would love to have “it all done” the reality is time and budgets don’t always support that…and that is ok!
Add pieces that represent you – Incorporate elements that reflect who you are—family photos, kids’ artwork, meaningful quotes, treasures found when traveling or heirlooms that tell your story. These touches are what make a house a home.
Start Small – Start small. Declutter one room (or drawer!), rearrange furniture, or add a personal touch like a plant or piece of art. These little steps can make a big difference and help you feel more connected to your space.
Celebrate Your Progress – Your home doesn’t need to be “finished” to be beautiful. Celebrate the small updates and improvements you make along the way. Each step brings you closer to a space that feels like you.
Creating a home that’s uniquely yours doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. By focusing on what feels right for you and your family, you’ll craft a space that’s not only beautiful but also meaningful.
With these tips, you’ll be on your way to creating a home that’s as unique and special as you are.
