A home isn’t just where we live, it’s where we recharge, connect, and create lasting memories. Certain spaces in your home play pivotal roles in supporting your day-to-day and nurturing your well-being. Let’s explore five spaces you need in your home, how they can work for you, and why they matter.
The bathroom is often overlooked but plays a vital role in your day. It’s where you prepare to tackle your day in the morning and unwind at night. Whether you want a spa-like escape or a simple, efficient layout, creating a bathroom that supports your well-being is key. Focus on easy-to-clean surfaces, soothing colors, and storage solutions that make your routines seamless.
What We Do: I utilize baskets, a lot! They’re perfect for keeping everything accessible while making it easy to put things away. Each category has its own designated basket: one for skincare, one for extras like toothpaste and cotton balls, and another for cleaning supplies. While the baskets themselves may not always stay perfectly organized, having a designated space keeps the overall area tidy.
I also love keeping the necessary cleaning supplies in a basket under the sink. It’s so convenient to grab when I need to do a quick wipe-down, helping the bathroom stay fresh and functional with minimal effort.
Everyone needs a place to pause, unwind, and snuggle up. Your cozy space might be as simple as a corner with the perfect chair, soft blanket, and a good lamp. Maybe it is a window nook or a flipped closet. Stock it with your favorite books, journals, or even a basket for knitting or puzzles. Think of it as your personal retreat for reading, relaxing, or simply taking a break from the chaos of the day.
What We Do: In our house, we have a extra comfy chair in the living room with a basket of books and a throw blanket. The chair is everyone’s favorite spot for reading or just sitting quietly with a cup of tea. We also made sure the kids create cozy spots in their rooms. Just the other day by son headed to his when he was upset.
Often referred to as a mudroom, but not limited to this, this space is all about creating a smooth transition between the outside world and your home. A well-thought-out drop zone for shoes, bags, and outdoor gear can help keep your house tidy while supporting your daily routine. Use it as a hub for your errands—think bins for returns, donations, or library books—and a spot for last-minute checks before you head out. How smooth or chaotic this feels will carry into your next stage in your day.
While we are fortunate to have a room to play this role for us, you are not out of luck if you don’t. Time to get creative to address this need. Use the space near your main door, even if it’s just a wall or corner. Take advantage of vertical space by adding shelves or wall organizers.
What We Do: We have a spot near the door with bins and spots for donations, returns, and items that need to go back to friends or family. Also make the weather related essentials (hats, gloves, rain jackets) that change by season easy to swap. We have a “gloves and hat” bin with a lid for warm weather storage, I quickly dump them into the bin and take to the basement. The baskets they were held in, in our mudroom is now ready to be filled with swimsuits and baseball gear.
The kitchen table is the heart of the home—a place to gather for meals, connect over coffee, help with homework, or play games. It’s where relationships grow and memories are made. Give this space the attention it deserves by ensuring it’s functional and welcoming.
What We Do: We make an effort to clear the table at the end of every day. Sometimes we add a small centerpiece, like fresh flowers or a seasonal decoration, to keep it feeling special and ready for meals or family games.
The outdoors has an undeniable impact on our well-being. Whether it’s a patio, a porch, or a simple corner of your yard, having a dedicated outdoor space makes it easier to step outside and enjoy fresh air. Equip it with seating, cozy lighting, or even a small fire pit to make it inviting year-round. Once the warmer weather starts we are outside on our patio most days, it replaces our living room and kitchen!
What We Do: It’s where we go to watch the sunset or chat as a family. Even in cooler weather, the blankets make it easy to enjoy time outdoors. Have dinner, read a book, play games, and watch all the fun the kids get into. Make it enjoyable and easy to use. I love when we add our curtains to the porch, it brings a comforting touch.
While these aren’t the only spaces that matter in a home, they’re often overlooked. Each one plays a unique role in supporting your daily life and nurturing your family.
Do you have these spaces in your home? Which one would you like to enhance to better support your goals and lifestyle?
