Unexpected Places to Discover Art for Your Home

One of the simplest ways to add a personal touch to your home is by intentionally selecting art—pieces that speak to you. Whether it’s family photos, candid moments with the kids, artwork from your favorite little artists, or stunning creations from talented makers, the right art can elevate your space and make it feel uniquely yours.

But where do you find these perfect pieces? Beyond traditional galleries and home decor stores, there are so many unexpected places to uncover beautiful, meaningful art. Here are some of my favorite sources for discovering unique pieces and then don’t forget to check out my blog on ways to frame and display them beautifully.

Thrift & Antique Stores: Hidden Art Gems

Secondhand shops, estate sales, and flea markets are treasure troves for one-of-a-kind finds. A few things to look for:

• Postcards, Old Books & Magazines
  • Vintage illustrations, maps, and typography can be framed as statement pieces.
  • Postcards bring a touch of history, especially when you find ones postmarked in the early 1900s! Keep in mind this can also be a great way to buy and display a travel souvenir.
  • Flip through the pages of old book, sometimes the book is full of piece you will want to use, while others may have just one page tucked away waiting to be your next statement piece.
  • Don’t overlook the magazines. Holiday themed, and outdoor world options can have some unique photos, drawings and paintings tucked in their pages.

• Frames with Potential – Sometimes, the art inside isn’t your style, but the frame is a gem. If a frame catches your eye, imagine it with a different print inside. A quick swap (and sometimes a coat of paint) can completely transform it!

I love finding square frames and any with a texture to the boarder.
This one had a mirror in it, but with a little swap… a coat of paint, a white matte and a new sketch, it brought a new life to the frame.

Your Kids’ Artwork: Turning Childhood Creations Into Decor

I know—if you have kids, the artwork piles up fast. But there are always those special pieces that stand out, the ones where you see the extra effort, creativity, or pure joy. These deserve a place in your home!

• Frame It Well – A floating frame, a crisp white matte, or a wood picture hanger instantly elevates their art, making it feel intentional and stylish.
• Bonus Tip: If the full piece feels overwhelming, highlight just a portion of it. Cut out a favorite section and place it in the center of a matte for a refined, gallery-like look.

I mean how cute is this bird! It had to find a place in our home to bring us joy!

For some of you, that’s all I have to say and you’re off! For others, I may have heard a groan of Yeah, right… But trust me—there are endless options that work for every skill level.

• Make it extra special by creating it with friends or family for an added layer of meaning.
• Try abstract painting, pressed flowers, or collage art if you want something beginner-friendly.
