Whether you’re an avid reader, looking to rekindle your love of books or just getting started, finding small, intentional ways to add reading to your day can make all the difference. Here are 10 ways to help you weave reading into your life:
1. Spend Time in the Library
There’s something magical about the smell of books and the calm energy of a library. Browsing the shelves can be inspiring—check out the featured displays, discover new titles, and explore creative programs your library offers. Libraries are evolving in such fun ways; there’s so much more to enjoy than just books.
2. Keep a Book by Your Bed
Make reading part of your nightly wind-down routine. Even if it’s just a couple of pages, reading before bed can help you transition to sleep. I’ve kept this habit for years—even after a late night, I always sneak in a few pages.
3. Create a Cozy Reading Spot
Set up a special space dedicated to reading. Think a comfy chair, a soft blanket, a cute pillow, and a side table with a lamp for your coffee or tea. Enhancing your reading experience with a cozy setup can make it easier to relax and dive into a book.
4. Connect with Other Book Lovers
Join a book club, follow bookish groups on social media, or keep an eye out for my “last read/current read” posts! Regular conversations with friends often include swapping book recommendations—it’s such a fun way to discover new titles and stay motivated to read more.
5. Cancel (or Pause) a Streaming Subscription
We’ve all been sucked into binge-watching a new show. If reading is a priority, consider canceling one or two streaming services. Less screen time equals more book time!
6. Listen to Audiobooks
Audiobooks count as reading, too! Narrators bring stories to life in a whole new way, adding depth and excitement. Try apps like Libby (via your library), Audible, or Spotify to listen while you’re commuting, exercising, or relaxing.
7. Incorporate Audiobooks into Your Routines
Folding laundry, prepping dinner, driving to work—these are perfect moments to listen to a great story. You’ll be amazed at how much “reading” you can fit into your day when it’s paired with your daily tasks.
8. Invest in Screen-Free Evenings
Designate one or more evenings a week as “screen-free,” and replace TV or scrolling with reading. Not only will it boost your reading time, but it can also create a calmer, more mindful evening routine. Need more screen-free ideas? Check out this post for inspiration.
9. Find a Reading Buddy
Reading goals are easier to stick to with a buddy! Partner up with a friend who also wants to read more—you can share recommendations, encourage each other, and even read the same book for fun discussions.
10. Keep Multiple Books on Hand
Life is unpredictable, and so is your mood when it comes to books. Keep a variety of options available—whether from your bookshelf, the library, or your local thrift store. I’m not near a bookstore, so I’ve been loving Bookshop.org. Check out my curated lists to find your next read!
Adding more reading to your day doesn’t have to feel like a chore. With a little creativity and intentionality, you can create habits that make reading a natural and enjoyable part of your routine.
