The time “in-between” wrapping up your day and actually going to sleep is precious, but in most cases we frequently are rushing through our day that when this “in-between” time hits, we crash; and end up using it to scroll or zone out.
I do this plenty, and at times, it is my conscious choice to spend my time before going to bed. But there is something special and refueling when you intentionally spend it away from a screen and spend the last quiet stretch before bed on activities that help you close the chapter of today with ease.
May the serenity of the evening always reside in your mind and heart.

For me this time starts after I have tucked the kids into bed, and while there is always the chance (a very likely chance) they will be back up needing one more bathroom stop, drink of water or an answer to a question about life, I have reached the closing of the day. Here are some of my favorite screen free evening activities.
5. Sit on your porch – maybe you just sit in the silence, listening and looking. Or add reading, an audio book or connecting with your spouse. Looking for an extra treat? Light up a candle or table top fire. We have the Mini Solo Stove and it is not only cute, but adds a special touch to our porch sitting evenings.
6. Give yourself a face massage – you may have “the tools”, but not to fret if you don’t, your hands or an ice cube work just as well. I use these Ice Globes, they are amazing! I typically listen to an audio book while using them and relaxing for the evening.
7. Meditate – start small, even 2-3 minutes to focus inward has great benefits to settle for the evening. Sit or lay focusing on your breathing, if you are looking for something more I enjoy the meditation options on Peloton and YouTube is full of options (again, no need to watch, just listen in).
8. Work on your mobility or foam roll – Peloton! Again! They have great 5 or 10 minute classes walking you through a mobility routine or foam rolling session. This is one I wish I did more, they both feel amazing. Not sure about foam rolling? Here is a good starter option, and one I still use years later. Have you done either?
9. Move through a yoga routine – you know the drill by now! Peloton, youtube and any other fitness program will have a variety of options for you.
10. Listen to an audiobook – I am always listening to one book while also reading one book at a given time. Some are just better when you listen. Plus it gives you flexibility when you can listen (doing dishes, giving yourself a ice globe face massage, sitting on the porch, etc.). Audible is the popular option, but check out your local library, they are now offering great apps where you can “check out” an audio book. Libby and Hoopla are two I use. A few books I really enjoyed as audio books (yes they can be hit or miss based on the narrator), varying topics and genres
11. Flip through a Magazine – when was the last time you did this? If you have a stash tucked away or sitting in the living room, pull one out, flip through looking and perusing or spend time reading the articles.
12. Talk and connect – Set aside time to talk and truly connect with your spouse, older kids, partner, roommate, whomever would fill your cup. Do it free from the distractions of screens. Whether it’s sharing about your day, discussing future plans, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
13. Bake something – whether it’s trying out a new recipe or revisiting a family favorite. Enjoy the process of measuring, mixing, and creating something from scratch.
Baking is love made visible.
14. Prep a delicious breakfast – not only will this give you a relaxing, screen-free evening, but it also sets you up for a smooth start the next day. Whether it’s overnight oats, smoothie ingredients, or a quiche, the effort you put in tonight pays off twice: once in the calming process of preparation, and again in the convenience of a ready-made breakfast.
15. Write a card – pull out a note card or even plain paper, and take a few moments to share life updates or check in with someone you don’t see often. Or keep it simple with a quick note saying ‘I’m thinking of you.’ The process of writing is both thoughtful and grounding, and the joy you’ll pass along is sure to bring a smile to someone’s face.
16. Write a note for your spouse or kids to wake up to – how special for them to wake up to a little note from you! I have done post its on the mirrors or coffee maker. I love little note cards for the kids lunches or by their breakfast – I typically snag them at downtown shops, something like these , but online is always an option. One more idea…have a journal you share with your kiddo. Allowing you to send messages back and forth. (Read more here on the 5 Ways to Add Journaling to Your Day post I have, giving more details on a “notes with the kids” )
17. Journal about your day – staying in the same area as idea 16, spend some time writing and reflecting. Allow yourself to free write or if that seems to open ended, stick with something more structured. My daily journaling include 3 things I am grateful for, prayers for someone/thing, one thing I am proud of and one thing to let go. Download my Daily journal guide here.
18. Review and Plan Tomorrow – glance over your calendar and set your priorities and task list. Make sure all the pieces of your day are accounted for so there are no surprises. Writing everything down not only keeps you organized but also gives your mind permission to relax, knowing you’ve got it all under control.
19. Be Creative – whether it’s painting, drawing, or sewing, give yourself the freedom to explore your artistic side. Engaging in hands-on creativity is a great way to unwind and express yourself without screens. It’s not about perfection, but about enjoying the process
20. Explore and practice a hobby – whether it’s playing guitar, writing, or any other passion, dedicate some time to hone your skills and immerse yourself in what you love. Engaging in a hobby not only brings joy but also allows for personal growth and a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it’s a perfect way to unwind and recharge, leaving screens behind for a while.
21. Go to bed early – last but certainly not least, have you considered the benefits of turning in early? Prioritizing rest can make a world of difference in how you feel the next day. Enjoy a peaceful evening doing one of the above ideas, then head to bed early AND ENJOY the extra rest.
