Reading is such a deeply personal experience, shaped by our emotions, experiences, and the situations we’re navigating both before and while we read. A book I found amazing the first time, leaving me reflective and thinking about it long after, might not move me the same way if I read it again later.
And that’s okay. Neither experience is right or wrong, they’re simply different. The shift comes from how our emotions, life experiences, or perspectives may have changed in the time between readings.
This same principle applies between readers. While I might highly recommend a book that resonated deeply with me, someone else might finish it wondering what I loved so much about it. The reverse is also true, books that didn’t connect with me might hold incredible meaning for someone else.
I share this as a gentle reminder, for myself and for you: the beauty of books lies in how they meet each of us where we are, in that moment of our journey. So, as I share my recommendations and ratings, and as I hear yours (which I love to get), it’s helpful to remember that everyone’s reading experience is uniquely their own.
My Rating System
Now, let me share a little about how I rate my books, so you have a bit of insight into what makes something a 3, a 5, or somewhere in between.
First off, I’m not a literary expert—I’m just a reader who loves discovering new stories. Whether it’s fiction or fact, I’m drawn to books that offer new perspectives, fresh insights, or a glimpse into history, people, and ideas.
When I rate a book, it’s rarely about technical composition or whether it would win a literary award. Instead, I ask myself:
- How did I feel while reading it?
- Did it stay with me after I finished?
- Did it offer something meaningful—new ideas, emotions, or perspectives?
So, when you see my ratings, know that they’re not about perfection. They’re about connection. Whether I give a book a 3 or a 5, it’s based on how it resonated with me and what it left behind in my mind and heart.
I’d love to hear about your favorite reads or how you approach rating books. Let’s share the stories that have moved us—and celebrate how different books speak to each of individually!
