As a journal and notebook lover, I have several ways that I put pen (or marker) to paper. If you are with me, check out the below list for a few new ideas to add to your journal loving habits. If you are new to journaling or are considering adding it to your routine, the below are 5 great ways to ease into a beneficial routine.
Write down 3 to 5 things you are grateful for each day. This is probably not new news for you. If you are currently doing this you know the impact it can make for your positive energy and stress management. If you are not currently journaling, this can be a simple start.
Do it any time of the day, to start your day, throughout your day or as you wrap up your day.
It can be specific to that day or it can be anything beyond. I encourage you to think detailed. Think beyond, “my health”, and add the specifics, “walking for an hour with the sun shining and a dear friend.”
Where should we go to eat tonight? What gift should I get for them? What do we want to do this summer?
All of the answers to these questions come at a different time than you need them. Have a place to add these items when they come to mind. A few of the lists I keep in my “lists” journal are: fun things we did this summer, gift ideas for the kids, friends or family, vacation ideas, restaurants to try and books to read.
This one has been a new addition for me. As a person focused on checklists and finishing projects I can get lost in the race for the end. Feeling ”unaccomplished” until something is “across the finish line”.
Tracking daily wins has me paying closer attention to the small things. The things I would normally over look but now I am seeing, experiencing, celebrating and enjoying.
The challenge I was presented with and that I am passing on to you if you add daily wins to your journaling routine is to write down 15 wins. Trust me! This helps you in seeing all the little things better than ever before.
If you are a reader I highly encourage you to add this one to your journaling routine.
When reading a self help, personal growth or professional development style book I will pull out my journal. I jot down notes, quotes. Answers to the questions they ask or the activity prompts. I love to look back for reminders or to reference when working on goals. Some times it is just text but I also throw in doodles, markers and designs.
I will sneak one more in with this, I have a journal where I jot down any books I finish. Add in a comment or two about the book and what you liked or disliked about the book. It is fun to see at the end of each year what I read.
My favorite journaling is the “notes with mom” journals I have with each kiddo. We pass messages back and forth. I get to celebrate things things they do, special moments we had and little lessons.
They get to share their feelings, wants and needs, and stories from their day. We don’t do it everyday but when we do it is something we all enjoy!
There is just something about pen to paper that a keyboard can’t replace.
What is your favorite way to fill your journal? (or journals, for any one that has an obsession like me!) I would love to hear.
