We have countless thoughts throughout the day.
But when faced with a blank journal page, I can suddenly feel lost, not a single thought comes to mind. Or worse, I start judging every thought and whether it is “worthy” of taking space in my journal.

Anyone else with me?
And yet, I truly love to journal. I’ve felt the positive impact of taking time to turn inward. To reflect. To slow down long enough to notice what is happening beneath the surface.
A simple journaling routine can lower stress, increase self-awareness, and help you feel more grounded in your everyday life. But it only works if you know where to begin.
Instead of starting at a blank page, I lean into a few core prompts. They give structure without pressure. They help me build a journaling rhythm that feels supportive, not overwhelming.
A few general notes on journaling before we jump in:
- When – Journal any time of day. First thing in the morning, a midday rest or as you wind down in the evening. Pick a time that works for you.
- Where- Keep it simple, a quiet corner, your kitchen table, the car while you wait in the pick upline. It doesn’t have to be Instagram worthy. This may be determined on your when.
If you are looking to start a journaling habit or gently adjust the one you currently have, welcome! Read on and explore if these prompts would be of value to you!
Gratitude: 3 Things to be Thankful For
Write down 3 to 5 things you are grateful for.

This is probably not new to hear. but there is a reason it is foundational. Gratitude shifts perspective. It softens stress and trains your mind to look for what is working and cherished instead of what is lacking.
If you are already practicing gratitude you know the power.
If you are not, this can be a beautiful place to begin. Think beyond the general, like “my health”. Get specific, “walking for an hour with the sun shining and a dear friend” or ” The conversation we had a dinner tonight.”
Details deepen the impact. You will start to see yourself looking for, noticing and cherishing these moments more and more throughout your day.
If you want to deepen your gratitude and perspective, explore my Finding Joy posts They’re filled with reflections on daily life, small meaningful moments, and the beauty woven into ordinary days. Gratitude grows when we practice noticing.
Compassion: Lifting Others Up
Take a moment to think of someone else

Maybe it is a prayer, maybe it is to send positive energy, maybe it is simply holding them in your thoughts.
We are all navigating full days, making it easy to stay in-ward focused, without meaning to. But image the ripple effect is each of us paused daily to lift someone else up. It can be someone we know, or someone we don’t
Maybe you send confidence to your child as they navigate a tough conversation.
Maybe you hold space in your heart for a family facing hardship or a community facing a tragedy.
Often this reflection leads to action… making a donation, sending a text or calling them to check in. And sometimes, that small action means more than we realize.
Celebrate: One Thing You’re Proud Of
Write one thing you are proud of

Yes we are going to do a little celebration right now! This is a moment to acknowledge effort, not perfection.
Just like the others, let’s get specific. Completing a work project, taking a walk when you didn’t feel like it. Choosing a book instead of the late night doom scroll.
Small wins count. Give yourself space to notice and celebrate them.
