Shaped by emotions, experiences, and the stories that stay with us.
Reading Is Personal
Reading is such a deeply personal experience, shaped by our emotions, experiences, and the situations we’re navigating both before and while we read.
A book I found amazing the first time, leaving me reflective and thinking about it long after, might not move me the same way if I read it again years later.
And that’s okay.
Neither experience is right or wrong, they’re simply different. The shift often comes from how my emotions, life experiences, or perspective may have changed in the time between readings.
The same is true between readers.
While I might highly recommend a book that resonated deeply with me, someone else might finish it wondering what I loved so much about it. And the reverse is also true, books that didn’t fully connect with me may hold incredible meaning for you.
I share this as a gentle reminder, for myself and for you, that the beauty of books lies in how they meet each of us exactly where we are.
So when I rate and recommend books, know that it’s always through that lens.
My Book Rating System
I’m not a literary expert. I’m simply someone who loves stories.
I love hearing new voices, whether fact or fiction. I’m drawn to books that offer insight, reflection, joy, new worlds to explore, and that quiet feeling of “I need to know what happens next.”
When I rate a book, I’m not judging technical composition or literary awards. I’m asking myself:
- How did I feel while reading it?
- Did it stay with me after I finished?
- Did it offer something meaningful? Joy, perspective, challenge, or growth?
- Did it make me want to keep turning the pages?
Here’s what my ratings mean:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars | Unforgettable
This book left me with a “book hangover.” I’m still thinking about it. It’s shelf-worthy, makes my favorites list, and is one I’ll likely return to again. A story that truly resonated.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars | Highly Recommended
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and find myself recommending it often. It may not be an all-time favorite, but it left an impression and offered meaningful insight or joy.
⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars | Enjoyable, But Missing Something
A solid read with strong moments. I enjoyed most of it, though a few aspects didn’t fully land for me. Still worth picking up — sometimes the right book simply finds the right reader at the right time.
⭐⭐ 2 Stars | A Stretch for Me
This one was hard for me to get through, but I finished it because I rarely leave a book unfinished (that’s a me thing, not necessarily a book thing). It just wasn’t the right fit for me.
⭐ 1 Star | Not for Me
You likely won’t see many of these from me. I focus on sharing books I enjoy and would recommend. My goal is to inspire more reading, not discourage it.
A Final Note
When you see my ratings, remember: they’re about connection, not perfection.
I love hearing your recommendations, too. Because at the end of the day, books are meant to be shared, discussed, and experienced differently.
