Today we’re keeping things focused and looking at a few ways to expand your reading.
If you’ve ever felt stuck in a reading rut, unsure what to pick up next, or convinced there aren’t enough hours in the day for books (I hear you), this one’s for you.
And yes, when I say “reading,” I absolutely mean audiobooks too.
“What is a bookshelf, other than a treasure chest for a curious mind?”

Why Expanding Your Reading Matters
Expanding your reading doesn’t mean abandoning what you love. It simply means stretching your edges a bit, giving yourself permission to explore.
Some of the most surprising learning, growth and joy, comes from picking up something you never thought you’d enjoy.

10 Ways to Expand Your Reading and Discover New Books
Here are 10 simple ways to stretch what you read:
- Ask someone you trust or admire what their favorite book is. Your mom or dad, sister, brother, best friend, colleague, etc. The list of who you could ask is endless, and you might discover a new genre to love.
- Read what your child just finished. Children’s books (across all ages) often hold beautiful, though simple, themes.
- Re-read a childhood favorite. It is amazing how a story feels through adult eyes and following your many life experiences.
- Ask your librarian for a recommendation.
- Pick a book from the “Chance” shelf at your library. If it’s there, it’s popular, discover why.
- Read your spouse’s favorite book. Whether it is their current favorite or something they loved when they were younger. It is a fun way to capture new insight into who they are or were.
- Choose something from the NEW section at the library. Explore what is new adn trending.
- Head to the children’s section and read a Newbery Award winner. Many libraries have designated areas on display, these stories received the award for a reason.
- Select from the Staff Favorites display at a bookstore or library. These are highlighted for a reason.
- Follow fellow readers on social media. Include a wide range of genres, ages, and formats to broaden your exposure.

A Personal Stretch
Right now, I’m listening to a science-fantasy series, Dungeon Crawler Carl.
If you know me, you know this is SO far outside my usual genres. I will always cherish a good WWII historical fiction novel. That’s home base for me. But this one…came from a “Chance” shelf moment and a librarian recommendation.
So here we are! I can admit I am enjoying it, and it has made me laugh outload multiple times. Will I finish the full series? I don’t know, but I am glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone.
Stepping outside my comfort zone hasn’t replaced what I love. it’s expanded it. It’s helped me appreciate different storytelling styles, humor, pacing, and imagination.
There’s something both special and important about that kind of stretching.
